Project 256, 2016
Project
Project 256 is a retail and hospitality redesign project of a heritage building, situating itself at the intersection of King St. West and Spadina Ave. The project imagines to ‘plug-in’ to the original structure; translating a 2D game interface to 3D world.
The concept of the project comes from an 8-bit game, Pacman. The design allows each individual to experience the proposal as the main game player.
8-bit Game Concept / Glitch
An 8-bit game contains a limit of 256 unit storages and when the amount exceeds, a glitch occurs. Here, after the 15th floor, Project 256 shows what appears to be an error - an intentional glitch in the architecture following the idea of 8-bit.
Game Element to Architecture
The element of the four types of ghosts in pacman, is introduced to the project as they perform four types of hotel rooms: Blinky - Sleeping Pod, Pinky - Single Bedroom, Clyde - Double Bedroom, Inky - Vip Bedroom. The visitors become the protagonists inside the architecture, and "pac" ghosts by exploring the space.
